Week 1: Introduction

Hi there!

My name is Chelsea and I am a student at the University of Oklahoma. This fall marks the beginning of my third year here at OU, and I am incredibly excited about what the new semester will bring (even though the fact that I'm a junior still freaks me out a little).

A little about myself: I was born and raised in the metropolitan Detroit area in Michigan. I am proud to say I was born in the cereal capital of the world, Battle Creek, Michigan, where the Kellogg's company was founded, but I grew up in the suburbs of Madison Heights, and later, Bloomfield Hills. I graduated from Andover High School in Bloomfield. When I was in high school, I was on the swim team and played the violin in the symphony orchestra. I also loved to join community youth ensembles outside of school--despite rivalries between the different schools in the area, I met some of my closest friends in these groups and always enjoyed making music with them. Overall, I have fond memories of my time in high school and strong ties to my hometown.

So you may be wondering, why OU? All my life, I had just assumed I would go right down the street to the University of Michigan (and there will always be a special place in my heart for this wonderful institution--Go Blue!) Honestly, I never even knew OU existed until December of my senior year, and Oklahoma was never even a consideration. However, when I was applying for colleges, I knew I wanted to go into medicine and I researched a lot of accelerated medical programs: these are the ones where the student goes through four years of undergraduate studies at an institution and then is offered direct admission into that university's medical school. When OU sent me information about their Medical Humanities program, I learned about the intermingling of science and the arts and was immediately interested. What really sealed the deal was when I finally visited the beautiful campus and absolutely fell in love.

I mean, just look at that library. (Source: Wikimedia Commons)

Now, I'm entering my fifth semester at OU and have loved every minute of it. I am a pre-med student majoring in psychology and minoring in chemistry and biology. When science gets tiring, however, I go back to one of my first loves, the violin. Although I don't perform with an orchestra anymore, I am fortunate to be able to play with my campus ministry's worship band. In the future, I would like to be a pediatric psychiatrist, but if that doesn't work out, then I think it would be interesting to incorporate music with psychology and perhaps go into the relatively new field of music therapy.

I am so thankful to be a Sooner and I can't wait to see what the rest of my college career has in store!

  1. Everything sounds so cool! Music therapy would be a really interesting field to work in. My cousin is getting into art therapy which I think is really cool too.
I was a psychology major but then decided it wasn't for me anymore, but it's my minor now because I do enjoy learning about it.
I'm a little jealous that you play the violin? Do you play any other instruments?

  2. I think it is really cool you are from Michigan and decided to come to OU, I am from Colorado so I too am always getting the question from people asking why I came here! I think it is really cool that you have been able to continue your passion for playing the violin here in Norman; I play the acoustic guitar so I understand your love of music!

  3. Oh wow, Chelsea, it is so exciting to meet people who are so satisfied with their school choices and who can see their school choices and career choices and life choices all coming together... I am especially taken with the idea of how you can use music in conjunction with psychiatry. I would guess that is something very powerful, and there is probably so much we can still learn about just why it is that music is so deeply important to people. Maybe you could explore some kind of musical topic for this class! Especially with all the music that is available at YouTube (so many of the traditional ballads and other folksongs!) you might be able to come up with something very musical. You can see what you think as you explore the possibilities!

  4. I love hearing stories about how people discovered/decided to come to OU! These stories are so different from my own. I was born and raised in Oklahoma. Sooner born, Sooner bred. I was so set on coming to OU that I did not even apply to any other universities. Nevertheless, I know I made the right choice, and have loved my time here!

I totally get what you mean about the time flying by! It is insane for me to think that I am a senior this year! I hope you continue to enjoy your time here, and good luck with all your ambitious endeavors!

  5. I think it's so cool you play the violin! I've never met anyone who played it, but I think it's so beautiful hearing someone who can play well. How many years have you played the violin for? I also find it fascinating that you're majoring in a medical field. All the science and what not is completely beyond me, considering I'm a Political Science major! I also think it's neat that you're from Michigan. I've never been there, but I'm sure it's much different than Oklahoma.

  6. Hi! It’s nice to meet someone going on a similar major track at OU (I’m a pre-med psych major). What made you interested in medicine? Anyways, that’s awesome that you have an appreciation for both sciences and humanities, as well as music. I can play piano, and I’ve never really tried any other instrument. Are you interested in learning how to play other instruments, since you've played violin for so long?

  7. I'm so envious that you play violin! I've always wanted to learn to play cello, but despite the high quality of my high school's band program, we didn't have an orchestra. I'm pleased to hear that you keep music in your life even though it doesn't fit your career path. I can certainly attest to the catharsis of playing music as well. I feel the same about piano, and I'm just glad that I have a digital piano in my apartment.

  8. Hey Chelsea! It is so weird to have another Chelsea(y) Z. in a class! This is definitely a first for me! I have ALWAYS wanted to learn to play the violin! It is such a beautiful instrument! I love that you are considering music therapy! It is a great way to combine both of your loves! My brother is currently in school at SWOSU in Weatherford, OK studying music therapy and he absolutely loves it! Good luck in school! It sounds like you will do amazing things!

  9. It’s awesome that you came to OU from another state! I have grown up in Oklahoma most of my life, but I never really expected myself to go and look at me now! I am certainly not disappointed that I came here, but I wish I did more research on colleges before choosing this one.

Like you, I’m also starting my 3rd year here at OU and I’m taking a lot of science classes too! Haha. Unlike you though, I can’t play an instrument even if my life was on the line for it. It’s cool that you still play every now and then in college!

Anyway, I am looking forward to being in this class with you for the semester! :)

  10. Hey Chesea! We have a lot in common! I swam in high school too. What events did you swim? I was primarily a breast stroker, but I did some IM stuff too. I'm also Pre-Med and as a letters major, I definitely know the appeal of mixing science with the humanities. But you shouldn't be freaked out as a junior, because senior year is way freakier haha. Anyways, good luck on the MCAT and all that fun stuff that I'm sure you've got coming up!

  11. My mom was the CFO at the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and so I grew up going to all of the symphony concerts and fell in love with the violin! Although, I never learned to play. I would always go sit in the hall during rehearsals and listen to the violins. Now I love Lindsey Sterling! I am sure you know who she is, but I think her music is great! Your career choice sounds like such an interesting one. I think pediatric psychology would be amazing as well as music therapy. Music therapy would be great for you since it incorporates your love for music. I hope it all works out in your future endeavors for med-school.

  12. Hello Chelsea! Guess what? My parents actually lived in Battlecreek for 8 years before moving and settling down in Oklahoma! I have heard several stories about that town, and the wonderful people they met there! What a small world! Also, you may freak out about being a junior, but just wait until your a senior. Then you will really freak out, college goes by way too fast!
Anyways, best of luck with your semester! And also, best of luck with the MCAT for med school, I'm assuming by now you're already starting to stress out about that. It was great getting to know a little bit about you!

  13. Hi Chelsea! Reading this was especially fun because I went to high school in Michigan as well! I grew up in the Detroit area and went to high school in Grand Rapids and I always get the "how did you wind up in Oklahoma?" question. I think it's great here as well and I'm glad you're enjoying your time. Best of luck with your ambitions!

  14. Chelsea, I think it's pretty cool you come from the Detroit area, and although I have never been there, it is definitely on my list of places to visit. I am sure it is quite a culture shock venturing from Detroit to Oklahoma, but I think visiting and living in varying locations really gives you a greater understanding of the world, culture and people, so that's really neat! I also love that you are kind of fall into a very science-y and medical background with still a mix of a creative and musical side! That's exactly how I am, except I am a mix of math/business with a creative side, and I hope to merge the two together into a career in Investor Relations, just like you plan to merge yours! So I wish you well with your career path, and I look forward to reading your work in this class!

  15. Hey again! It is always nice to "meet" another pre-med student through this class! I am so happy that you were able to discover the opportunities OU's medical program extends to those who know what they want to do for their life at an early age. I also think that it is wonderful that you were able to branch out of your home state to experience the whole new world that is college! Best of luck in your pursuits of medicine!

  16. Hi Chelsea! It is so cool to meet other science majors who are interested also going into the medical field, especially when they are planning to do something so different with a medical degree. Combining your love for music with medicine is so unique and I think it is such a good idea. I think it would be so cool to see the sort of impact music has on the recovery of different patients. I'm sure you already have some ideas about that being a psych major!

I'm so glad you were won over by OU's beautiful campus. There's nowhere quite like here is there? I hope your semester is fantastic!

  17. Chelsea,
I think it is great that you made such a big decision to come down to Oklahoma to begin your post-secondary education. It is easiest to just attend a college that is close to home, but you made the choice to go to a university that best catered to what you wanted. I hope your experience here is rewarding!

  18. Hi Chelsea!

Man, your introduction was so interesting! It is pretty crazy how life changes after high school, especially where life ends up taking you. Your class load must be pretty intense considering your minors, but I'm sure you are doing just fine! I hadn't heard of the Medical Humanities program until last semester, and it is definitely something I wish I would have known about in high school! Good luck in the rest of your studies, and have a great rest of the semester!

  19. Wow, Chelsea, you are a long way from home! But that is so awesome that you fell in love with OU. Isn't it just great? I think a lot of people think Oklahoma has nothing to offer, but when they visit, boy are they shocked. It's such a beautiful place. I am glad you are enjoying your time here and OU and good luck with school!

  20. Hey Chelsea! Wow you did come a pretty far way for college didn't you? I feel like most of the people in this class that are not from Oklahoma are from somewhere pretty far. I hope you like it here in Oklahoma :) I think your future plans sound awesome. I would love to go to medical school, but it just isn't for me unfortunately. I used to play piano when I was younger, but I gave it up after three years. I really wish I had stuck with it because I think one of the neatest things is when someone can play an instrument. I bet you are awesome at the violin! That seems like such a tricky instrument to master! I look forward to reading your stories. Have a great second half of the semester!!!

  21. Nice to meet you Chelsea!

It's good to see someone else who is pursuing medical school in this class. My major is in Chemical Bio-sciences, but I imagine that we are taking quite a few of the same classes! The field of musical therapy sounds very intriguing. I'm a big music fan and played violin throughout high school, but I had never thought about the combination of music and medicine.
